My life. Documented.

I am an architectural designer living and working in the Seattle area. This blog is used to document my travels around the world.

So. Turns out I am not keeping regular updates. Shame on me. Especially when so much has been happening.

Since the last post, I moved into university accomodations. Not too shabby. Ok, maybe a little shabby… Pretty typical student housing… rediculously small room, uncomfortable bed, gross color carpet, the whole nine yards. But I finally have a place to unpack and rest. So no complaining here. There are five of us in our suite, and five suites per floor, and we are on the fifth floor. My flatmates are all American, as is most of the building. But there are still quite a few other nationals in here too. I have met people from France, Germany, Holland, the Netherlands, etc. Sadly no Scottish people living in the building. Yet to have really talk to a Scottish person besides the tellers at the market.

Edinburgh

Fast forward through the weekend to today. Day one of class is done! Neat!

Napier's Merchiston Campus

I arrived at studio at 10am (2am your time) this morning! Turns out one of the other Americans is an interior design student and is taking 3rd year interior architecture courses with me so I was glad I didn’t have to face the class alone. We get there, met some of the other students and the professor came in and said “who are you?”. No idea to expect us. So we introduced ourselves, showed a little paperwork, and he said “excuse me while I go yell at the international office!” and left. Wuh-oh.

He came back 15 minutes later and all was fine. Turns out he seems like a really cool professor with a great sense of humor. I don’t remember a studio professor with a sense of humor! He explained that the first part of our semester project will be to design an exhibit for the Edinburgh International Festival coming up this August. The Napier Photography and Film students are going to be going through the archives of photographs and videos from the past 60 years of the EI festival and the event organizers want to creatively display this footage by projecting it onto key landmarks throughout the city. It is up to the Interior Architecture department to create the proposals on what is projected where, in collaboration with the photo and film guys. If the event organizers like what we will produce, our exhibits will be inacted this August! (Too bad I won’t be in town)

So we split up into smaller groups to look at the different landmarks they have in mind. My group was assigned the King Theater so we visited it this afternoon. They wouldn’t let us inside yet, so we only got a few pictures from the outside. It was great being in small groups because I finally got to talk to my first Scottish person face to face which oddly hadn’t happened in my previous eight days in the country. They like to keep us American’s seperated for some reason…

We also talked about our class study tour… to Paris! The second week of Easter Break (hopefully) we will be spending four or five days exploring Paris. Since that was the number one place to visit in my book while I was here, I am very excited.

Tuesday is my day off so I am hoping to finally have time to open a bank account and buy a lamp for my room. Then I have my Debates class and Tectonics class to worry about.

PS. I updated the post below with more relevant pictures in case you don’t want to look through the many pages of pictures on my Flickr account. Meh. I will do that later.
