After seeing the older sights in Tokyo - the palace and temple - we devoted today to seeing the modern parts of town. We finally left Avid’s place at about noon, since we finally hit the sack near 1:30. Our first stop was food. Big Macs taste the same here as they do at home, but Avid’s shrimp sandwich was a little different than what you’d find in the states.
Next, we stopped at an import shop where Avid picked up some chocolates. Today is a “white day,” or a holiday; in particular, today, women give chocolates to men, who then give obligatory chocolates in return.
The subway took us to a part of Enima to find a hobby shop for Matt. It was closed. It’s a “white day,” oops. We stopped at an arcade to pass some time before traveling to Shinjuku.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building was our next stop. We took the elevator to the 45th floor of the building to the observation deck. We took a few photos of the view. Too bad Mt. Fuji was obscured by the clouds. Then we went to a huge electronics store, with 8 floors of everything. Avid left us around 4:30 for his party, and the rest of us wandered around the area, in and out of arcades and other shops. Kalun offered us a couple poses in one of the shops.
We somehow managed to order dinner, and eventually we hopped a train to Shabuya. This is a famous area of town reminiscent of Times Square. The intersection, Hachiko Crossing, is the one always shown in movies with people crossing the street in huge numbers.
Here, we visited a number of electronics stores and arcades. We were planning to wait for Avid to go clubbing, but he finally met up with us in Shabuya at about 11:30. The subways close at midnight, so we ended the day, and went back to the apartment.
